Quadrilaterals Worksheet................................................name(s)_________________________
1) Recall the definitions of the various quadrilaterals ("quads"):
Quadrilateral: a four-sided polygon
Parallelogram: a quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel
Rhombus: a parallelogram with 4 congruent sides
Rectangle: a parallelogram with 4 right angles
Square: a rhombus and a rectangle at the same time
2) Answer the following ASN questions and check your answers before you go on:
A S N a) A square is a parallelogram A S N b) A parallelogram is a square.
A S N c) A trapezoid is a parallelogram A S N d) A parallelogram is a rhombus.
A S N e) A rhombus is a parallelogram. A S N f) A square is a rhombus.
3) Open the folder called "Parallelogram". Drag any vertex. (Some vertices will cause the figure to change shape, others will move it.) Answer the following questions A, S or N based mostly on the appearance of the diagram, but measure segments and/or angles if it is hard to tell the answer just from the appearance of the figure. Are the opposite sides parallel? _____ Are the opposite sides congruent? _____ Are the adjacent sides congruent? _____ Are the opposite angles congruent? _____ Measure a pair of consecutive angles (consecutive angles are pairs that are not opposite). What is true about the pairs of consecutive angles ? ________________________
4) Construct the diagonals of the parallelogram. Are the diagonals congruent? ____ Is either diagonal bisected? _____ Do the diagonals bisect each other? _____ Do the diagonals bisect the angles (You should measure at least one pair of angles for this one.) ? _____ Are the diagonals perpendicular? _____
5) Open each of the rest of the quads and explore them one at a time. Ask yourself the above questions for each quadrilateral. Put an "x" in each square in the chart below if the property is always true for the particular quadrilateral. If it's true for only one pair of sides or angles, but a number in the square and make a note in the box as in the example on the checklist below:
