Geography World Interactive is a fun easy
project designed to motivate students in the middle grades to learn about
various cultures and geographical areas while communicating and creating
Landmark Pages. Use Geography World Interactive as an interdisciplinary
resource to link math and social studies! It enhances the MathWorld
Interactive learning experience by sharing cultural and geographical information
with other students.
How
do students participate?
Participation is easy! Students choose a local
landmark to research and learn about. The landmark can
be anything that they feel symbolizes and represents the part of
the world where they live. They create a brief, but well-written,
description of the site. Of course, they will want to include any
historical information, geographic directions, and explain why they selected
the site. Then, they take a picture with a camera or sketch the
landmark. Finally, they scan the images as gifs and send them via
e-mail with the written description to Geography World Interactive. To
do this, simply write the landmark description as e-mail and attach the
scanned gif file.
What
happens if I don't have a scanner or don't know how to work with gif files?
No
problem!!! An address will be provided shortly and you can just
send the pictures by snail mail to me and I will scan them and put them
on the website with your description.
What happens after the landmark descriptions are sent?
Landmark Pages are placed on the Geography World
website and students can see their work internationally published along
with the images they sent. Imagine their delight as there hard work
is displayed not on the classroom wall, not in the school walkways, not
even in City Hall, but instead displayed proudly for the entire world
to see.
Each
entry receives a Geography World Recognition Award noting some highlight
and strength of their work. Students can see their awards by visiting
the website and checking the Geography World Award Board. One entry will
be awarded the SWEEPSTAKES award and they will receive an email award
certificate.
Are
there any other benefits to participation?
Yes! Students will enjoy seeing and learn about
landmarks from around the world as they are displayed on the Landmark
Pages by other students.
