Dear Landmark Game Participants,
I am writing from Ulis Newton Elementary School in Henderson,
Nevada. Our
school is located in southern Nevada, and is seven years old.
We are a
year-round elementary school. This means that some of our students
are on
track break anytime you would visit us. Our track 1 students and
teachers
have been on break since the beginning of Winter Break in December.
They
will return to school January 25, when track 2 students and teachers
will
begin their break. This arrangement helps us keep from becoming
overcrowded in a school built for 640 students that now serves
840
students.
Henderson, our home town, is growing very fast. Our school district
builds many new schools every year because so many families move
to
Henderson every year. Henderson is very close to Las Vegas, Nevada.
The class that will be participating in the Landmark Game is made
up of
many students in the third grade that have qualified for the gifted
and
talented program at Newton. They are known as G.A.T.E. students,
and
attend class with me three times a week, each time for 50 minutes.
Our
time will be limited, but we would like to try our best to research
the
landmarks. The students are very eager for this to begin.
Sincerely,
Mrs. S. Gelbaugh
