General description of school and communities served

suburban -- little diversity!

Lower Moreland High School is located in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, twenty miles northeast of central Philadelphia. Primarily a residential, upper-middle class community, Huntingdon Valley has a population of nearly 13,000. Residents are well-educated, and are largely found in professional, technical, and managerial occupations. Their strong support for education is evident in the wide range of courses and programs offered by the high school.

Ninety-two percent of Lower Moreland's 1999 graduates are continuing their education, and the high school offers its highly competitive, largely college-bound students a rich array of academic courses and programs. With a 1999-2000 class of just 130 members, Lower Moreland offers students thirteen different Advanced Placement courses: U.S. History, European History, Economics, English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art History, Studio Art, French, German, and Spanish. Forty-one percent of our seniors will have availed themselves of this option; all take the Advanced Placement exam. Other noteworthy programs include an Asian Cultures seminar, World Studies and American Studies (two-year, interdisciplinary courses that integrate history and literature), and a summer initiative involving all students in grades K-12. All ninth graders must complete a course in computer applications, and starting last year, an interdisciplinary course in art and music entitled "From Bach to Brancusi".
