We walked over to the computer room around 10:00 a.m.; it was a beautiful day, finally, but no one voiced any complaints about missing the gorgeous day. We began by doing the e-mail thing and reading news. The participants were asked to read Mia Ong's postings in geometry.college/research/pre-college and post any thoughts the articles provoked.
Our main morning activity was learning the wide range of uses for Telnet. We opened the MacSamson software and were faced with this sneaky program that you need to know a lot of keywords for to use it fully. We were guided through changing passwords, the exciting world of Talk, Fingering, looking at Gopher and Lynx (UNIX version of a web browser) through Telnet, creating plans, and exploring telnet sites (Library of Congress, NASA).
Telnet led into lunch, and lunch led to Dick Lesh's talk on Alternative Assessment. I will be posting a separate article that will discuss his lecture sometime in the next few days. After the talk, the groups worked diligently on their individual projects until dinner was served. Last night's theme was Southern food. The conversation was stimulating, and especially educating for me. Prof. Klotz and Dick Lesh helped me to aspire to a new goal this next year, but I have to keep it secret until it is accomplished. The rest of the evening hours were taken up by busy group work.
I hope to get the article of Dick Lesh's talk posted as soon as possible.
