Elementary Problem of the Week, October 16-20, 1995

This week's problem was submitted by Andrea DiMaria, Mount St. Joseph
Academy, Flourtown, Pennsylvania.

Simon wants to tour the world. It costs $339.00 to travel to a city in
Europe, $210.00 to travel to a city in North America, $408.00 to a city in
Australia and $535.00 to a city in Asia, Antarctica, Africa or South
America.
Simon has $8000.00 to spend. His goal is to travel to each continent and
see as many cities as possible.

Plan a travel route for Simon starting from New York City so that he can
see as many cities as possible without spending more than $8000.00. Name
each city he has traveled to and the cost.

**If you travel to a city beginning with the letter S, you may deduct
$50.00 from the cost of traveling to that city.

*When traveling from a city on one continent to another city on the same
continent, cut the cost of normal travel to that continent in half.

Example: New York City to San Francisco costs only $55 (half of $210.00
less the $50 discount for traveling to a city beginning with the letter S).

***Remember, Simon must return to New York City at the end of the trip.

Bon Voyage! Enjoy your travels.

Correct Solutions submitted by:

My students at Mount St. Joseph Academy in Flourtown, PA were amazed at all
the work their math partners in the elementary schools put into this week's
problem. They learned a lot of geography reading the replies.

Special recognition to Katie Tobey in Mrs. O'Connell's 5th grade class.
She made a wonderful colored map with all the continents and oceans and
seas labelled. She mapped her continental voyage on this map for, showing
how many cities she visited in each area!

Albuquerque $210 Kansas City $105
New York City $105
Total $7995.00

The first thing that we did was estimate how much we could spend in each
continent. Next we tried to find cities with the letter S. We started in
North America because it had the least amount of charge to travel from city
to city. Then we found the next continent that was the least amount to
travel from city to city, that was Europe. Then we did cities in any place
and we tried to get as close as we could to 8000.

Hi Alissa,
Great Job! You took Simon to many interesting places and stayed within his
$8000 budget. I got his total spent to be $7472. Does your total agree
with that?

Jenna & Jessica,
You did a fantastic job! You took Simon to many interesting places and you
were very organized with your chart. I just want to point out a few minor
errors that occured when Simon travelled to Asia and Australia (see below).
Keep up the great work. By the way, what does C.A.T.S. stand for?
Your Math Friend, Katie Flanagan (Flourtown, Pennsylvania)
We have a solution which includes 50 cities (all beginning with the letter
"S") plus the return to New York:

We would begin in North American and fly to the following cities for $55.00
each:
Syracuse, NY
St. John, New Brunswick
Savana, GA
St.Thomas, Virgin Islands
St. Petersburg, FL
Scranton, PA
Saginaw, MI
Saute St. Marie, MI
Springfield, IL
St. Paul, MN
Salem, MA
Sioux City, IA
San Antonia, TX
Sante Fe, NM
San Diego, CA
Sacramento, CA
San Francisco, CA
Salem, OR
Seattle, WA
Spokane, WA
Spenard, AK
Total $1155.00

Then we will fly to South America:
Santa Cruz, Boliva $485.00
Sao Paulo, Brazil 2l7.50
Santiago, Chile 217.50
Santa Fe, Argentina 217.50

Then we will fly to San Martin,Antarctica Total $485.00

Now we are off to Africa:

Spring Bok, South Africa $485.00
St. Louis, Senegal 217.50
Sowakin, Sudan 217.50
Safi, Morocco 217.50
Sawaaj, Egypt 217.50
Total $1355.00

Cross the Mediterranean to Europe:

Salerno, Italy $289.00
Skien, Norway 119.50
Sevilla, Spain 119.50
Strasbourg, Austria 119.50
Stadskanaal, Netherlands 119.50
Total $767.00

Now to Asia:

Sverdiovsk, Russia $485.00
Smyrna, Turkey 217.50
Salem, India 217.50
Surakarta, Indonesia 217.50
Saigon, Viet Nam 217.50
Shanghai, China 217.50
Shijiahuang, China 217.50
Sapporo, Japan 217.50

Total $1522.50

                    $485 + 7 x $217.5
                                                          $485 + $1522.50 =
$2007.50

Down Under to Australia:

Sydney, Australia $358.00
Shellharbour, Australia 217.50 I think these should be $154
Southern Cross, Australia 217.50 $408/2= $204 less $50 = $154

Total $793.00 Total $359 + 2 x $154
= $666

Back to New York City, USA $210.00

Grand Total $7962.50 When I add your totals $1155 + $1790 +
                                                     $1355 + $767 +
$1522.50 + $793 + $210,

I get a total of $7592.50.

The correct total is $7950.50 which still leaves Simon $49.50
for his cab ride & tip.

Assuming he lives in New York City this should leave him $37.50 for the cab
ride home plus a tip.

We did not have the time to find out how many cities Simon could get to in
one trip. Our goal was to see how cheaply we could get to all of the
locations mentioned in the directions.

Solution #1 Joanna Gruber

Hi Joanna,
Great job visiting all the locations on a cheap budget. We found one error
in your answer. It cost $485 to visit cities beginning with "S" in Asia,
India, Africa or S. America ($535 - $50). We think that maybe you mistook
the $535 for $515. Then your cost of $465 would be correct. Great effort in
answering the problem.

Dear Ruth:

A last minute straggler - sorry these have come in so disjointed.

Hi Webster & Jason,
You took Simon to a lot of interesting places. It was fun charting his
travels. There were a few small mistakes that I pointed out. I was
wondering why you hopped from one continent to another so often.
You could have saved Simon some money by visiting all the cities on one
continent
before he traveled to the next continent. You obviously put a lot of work
into this.
Thanks for answering our challenge. Keep up the good work!

5. Saudi Arabia to Sydney = $358
6. Sydney to Micmerdo Station (Antarctica) = $535
7. Micmerdo Station to Salt Lake City UT = $55 *this should be $160.
8. Salt Lake City UT to Brazil = $535 $210 - $50
9. Brazil to Dudinka (Asia) = $535
10. Dudinka to Mali (Africa) = $535
11. Mali to Greece = $535 *should

LOCATION (Continent/City) COST TOTALS

Hi Katie,
You forgot to subtract $50 from many of the cities you had Simon first
visit on each continent because they began with "S", so your total amount
was $7277. You had Simon travel to all the continents including 49 cities.
