Incorporating the OMP in the Math Education Classroom
at Western Oregon University

MTH 396 (Elementary Problem Solving) is the last math course required for pre-service K-8 teachers.

Students must first take a year long foundations series, which consists of three courses:

The Elementary Problem Solving course has 4 main components. Pre-service teachers:

  • Write interesting story problems for their students.
  • Solve numerous problems.
  • Grade solutions using a rubric.
  • Mentor young students answering the Math Forum Fundamental POW.
