Learning from Teaching Cases - High School Focus Summary

Monday - Friday, July 7 - 11, 2008

Monday and Tuesday:

Entire group together. We discussed "math smartnesses", what the group is about, and did an activity where teachers looked at four of their past students and reflected upon

  1. how the student is smart in math
  2. the student's academic status in class
  3. the student's social status in class and (4) how the student participated in class.

Thursday:

Watched video from Anna Savoie's class. The activity was on domains, ranges and end behavior. The working group started by doing part of the activity and then listing (1) "What's the math?" and (2) "Where might students get confused?"

Following the video, the group discussed it with respect to the group's central question of "How do we know what students know?" The conversation also covered shuffle quizzes and how they relate to the central question.

Read and discussed Rachel Lotan article on creating groupworthy tasks. Again, the discussion tied back to the central question.

Friday:

Video (from Nicole Bannister's class) with pre-flection and reflection Task: Interpreting Graphs, which one represents the stated situation. Class: Arranged to facilitate group discussion as an informal assessment. Lens: How do we know what students know?

Key Points discussed:

Kids translate graphs to real life situations.
Listening to students helps teachers know what students know.
How does the classroom arrangement affect student learning and discussions?

Future Considerations:

What kind of project will we work on?
Ideas:
How do you setup a video club?
How do you find resources to pay for it?
How does one edit video for content (and technical side)?
What protocols should be established for future video clubs?
Online Possibilities for virtual-VideoClub:

How can we expand range of video clubs?
How can we facilitate creation of case study groups?
