Calculus Connections: Using Multimedia Technology
to enhance the Math Learning Environment
The calculus reform movement has pioneered the use of a
computer/calculator laboratory component in their courses. Multimedia
Calculus, published by J. Wiley & Sons, is designed to complement and
enhance such innovations by providing a rich, interactive environment where
students can use modern technology as an investigative tool to ask "What
if...?" questions, explore the nature of mathematical models and probe their
relationship with the real world. Multimedia Calculus will be delivered on a
CD-ROM. Its 24 modules will span the standard Calculus sequence, and will be
published with a Laboratory text book. The modules are intended to
supplement existing lecture formats that use either traditional or reform
texts. They use multimedia technology (video, sound, simulation, dynamic
graphics and symbolic manipulation) to provide an active, motivationing
context for exploration, discovery, analysis and interpretation. The
advantage of this format is that it is possible to demonstrate the rich
underlying structure and connectivity in this area of mathematics and
explore the concepts involved using a high degree of interactivity.
