Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: New Pedagogy in Other Courses

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Calculus I and II with an Extra Laboratory Hour

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Loyola University has introduced technology into some sections of calculus I and calculus II. The labs also add group projects, and open ended problems to the science mathematics curriculum. Our labs are unique because our students have options: 1. there are sections of calculus I and II without the extra lab hour, yet the experimental sections are very popular; 2. some of our students prefer using graphing calculators while others like using computers loaded with {\it Mathematica} during the same lab; 3. and our lab is open after school hours so that the students can meet and work problems and can get help from tutors. The speaker will present results and observations from three semesters of calculus sections with labs, and will share successful lab projects.
