Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Math Education Reform

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Leading the Way to Systemic Change
Innovations in Teacher Preparation Programs

This talk will describe the purpose and results of the Workshop, Leading the Way to Systemic Change --- The Roles of Mathematics Teacher Educators.

This workshop, held in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 2--4, 1994 was funded by a National Science Foundation grant written by James Leitzel and Patience Fisher. The participants came from 19 states, representing 25 institutions. The schools were mostly represented by teams of three including a faculty member primarily responsible for methods courses and/or supervising preservice teachers, a math content faculty member, and a chair or a K--12 mathematics teacher. After a series of sessions which addressed issues of particular importance in teacher preparation, each institutional team wrote a plan of action which focused on specific areas for improvement for the next school year. On June 2, 1995, team representatives met in Lincoln, Nebraska to discuss the changes made in individual programs and to help organize the outline for a report. This report will highlight the resulting innovations as well as overall recommendations concerning teacher preparation programs.
