Orlando Meetings: Presentation Summary

Back to Orlando: Math Education Reform

This is the summary of a presentation given at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 10-13, 1996, Orlando, Florida.

Using Guided Discovery of Recent Research in an Undergraduate Course

A description is given of an innovative final exam project that has been used successfully in an upper level combinatorics class. In completing the project, the students are guided to discover recent mathematical results (and in one case, to improve a result.) It is explained why the project is successful and how it relates to similar projects done by others. An assessment is made of the impact of such guided discovery on various types of students.
