Image I made using Mathematica and MS Paint to demonstrate level sets and contours. The function used is z=Sin[x]-Cos[y]. Darker regions of the contour map represent lower altitudes, and lighter regions represent higher altitude. Points on the contours are at the same height relative to each other.
