NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

This session will present ways to motivate students to actively engage in problem solving, primarily through the use of mathematical investigations and explorations. The discussion will focus on multi-dimensional, open-ended tasks designed to be rich in that they evolve as they are conducted. These investigations promote a non-algorithmic approach to problem solving in that they do not have predetermined methods or expected answers. The presenters, co-editors of the Investigations department for Teaching Children Mathematics, will assist participants in coming to an appreciation of the power of an investigation in developing problem solving skills.William R.
