NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

In investigating how children learn mathematics we have focused for several years on the role of imagery in children's mathematical thinking. There is now significant evidence that imagery is linked with students' sense making activity in mathematics, including their construction of number relationships. In this session we will present classroom related evidence of the power of imaging, show videotape of children using imagery as they solve mathematics problems and thus provide a setting for participants to reflect on their practice and its influence on students' imaging activity. We will also present imagery activities that promote mathematical learning.Anne M. Reynolds (University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK)
