Presentation Summary


This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

For the past five years, Joanne and Janice have been learning about and analyzing children's learning styles as researched and discussed by Hansen, Silver, Strong and Associates. Mathematics, by its very nature, involves predominantly sensing-thinking (fact-based, procedural information) and intuitive-thinking (analytical, logical thinking, patterning, reasoning) skills and activities. This fits the nature and learning style of sensing-thinking and intuitive-thinking students like a glove! But what about our sensing-feeling and intuitive-feeling learners who often make up to 80% of our elementary classes? How can we help them to process, understand and apply math in ways that make sense to them? Joanne Curran (1992 Presidential Awardee for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) and Janice Davis have created math curriculum for grades 2 - 5 based upon student learning styles. Presenting mathematics instruction in a variety of learning styles makes connections, builds bridges and causes all children to understand and use mathematics in a comprehensive way! This regular-session presentation is applicable for grades 1 - 6 and reflects upon practices researched and presented in Joanne's third-grade and Janice's fourth-grade classroom.Joanne S.
