NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

The connections between mathematics and quilting will be the focus of my proposed workshop, with special emphasis on Native American quilts and Amish designs. Connections within mathematics relating modular arithmetic and transformational geometry will be utilized to analyze quilts and to design new ones. Concepts relating cyclical applications in other fields will also be applied to the basic design process. What do the Chinese calendar, repeating decimals, seasons, and moon phases have in common? How do these topics relate to quilt design?Kathryn T. Ernie (Univ. of Wisconsin - River Falls, River Falls, WI)
