Math to Go!
Ideas to Engage Families in Mathematics Activities at Home

I plan to share ideas created for our district's K - 3 mathematics program to help "bring home the math." Funded by the Exxon Education Foundation, our district has launched "PowerTools for Math" in red toolkits, "Math to Go" in take-out boxes, and "Math Snacks" in empty "Pringle's" chips containers. Activities for parent-child sharing have been included n each. Basing our project on research that says students experience school success when parents are "in the loop," our primary objective has been to increase opportunities for students to develop mathematical power by involving parents in the learning process. Secondarily, our purpose in "re-educating" parents about mathematics has been to make them advocates of the reforms proposed in the Standards. Believing that "none of us is as smart as all of us," I intend to encourage participants to share with one another ideas they have found successful in promoting parent-child interaction in mathematics at home.
