NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

We will show sample units from the Voyager Elementary Mathematics Curriculum that help students develop the concepts of multiplication, division, and ratio through experiences with length, area, volume, mass, and time. The Voyager curriculum is being developed by the TIMS (Teaching Integrated Mathematics and Science) Project at the University of Illinois at Chicago with support from the National Science Foundation. Grades 1-3 of the curriculum will be published in 1996 and grades K, 4, and 5 will be published in 1997. The major premise underlying Voyager is that math is best learned through active involvement in solving meaningful problems. Science provides settings for active learning by channeling a child's natural curiosity into systematic investigations of the real world and furnishes a bridge between concrete experiences and abstract ideas.Philip Wagreich (University of Illinois, Chicago, IL)
