NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

This single presentation will provide the principal author of the first published international report of the Curriculum Analysis component of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study with the opportunity to present the report to the NCTM community. The Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a ten-year international study of mathematics and science education being conducted in approximately fifty countries under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). The Curriculum Analysis has been a significant aspect of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study since its inception. It represents one of the most momentous innovations introduced in the area of large-scale international comparative educational research. Conducted with funding from the National Science Foundation, the curriculum analysis has gathered data from a total of 270 science curriculum guides, 360 science textbooks, 260 mathematics curriculum guides and 341 mathematics textbooks from 48 countries. These data are exhaustive, page-by-page inventories of the contents, student performance expectations and disciplinary perspectives contained in each document. The data have been analyzed in accordance with a comprehensive suite of newly designed statistical methods. This presentation will present the results of the first analyses of these data directly from the first published international report of this phase of the TIMMS. The talk will thus follow closely the main arguments and principal findings in this first report, highlighting the findings of greatest relevance to educational policy makers around the world.William H.
