The Core-Plus Mathematics Project: Making Mathematics Accessible to All

The Core-Plus Mathematics Project (CPMP), funded by a five-year NSF grant, has been developing and evaluating an innovative three-year core high school mathematical sciences curriculum for all students, plus a fourth-year course continuing the preparation of students for college mathematics. The four-year program emphasizes mathematical modeling; integrates Standards-based topics from algebra/functions, geometry/trigonometry, statistics/ probability, and discrete mathematics; and features full use of graphics calculators. This session will provide participants with:
  1. an overview of CPMP perspectives on curriculum, instruction, and assessment in relation to issues of access and opportunity for all students;
  2. hands-on experience with portions of the multi-day investigations that constitute the curriculum; and
  3. a summary of lessons learned from field-testing in over 400 classrooms nationwide.
