Benchmarks for Mathematics and Science Literacy -- Part 1: Introduction & Part 2: Interpretation

Part 1:

The AAAS's Benchmarks for Science Literacy is highly consistent in spirit with NCTM's Standards, but is usually more explicit about what students are expected to learn. Ahlgren will compare the two sets of specifications, consider possibilities for integration of instruction, report on difficulties of keeping reform focused on learning goals, and sketch some long-term perspectives on reform. Kulm will present a reacting viewpoint from NCTM.

Part 2:

In as workshop-like a setting as the situation allows, participants will confront the difficulty of understanding the intent of a particular mathematics benchmark --- by considering successively
(a) its literal statement,
(b) perceptions of it by other teachers,,
(c) the context of earlier and later benchmarks related to it,
(d) a "strand map" of how it fits into a web of understanding that develops over time, and
(e) how it is (or is not) served by particular learning materials.

Andrew Ahlgren (Project 2061, AAAS, Washington DC)
Gerald Kulm (Bozeman, MT)
