NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

The presenters intend to discuss and demonstrate a particular collaborative method known as "jigsawing". Data from research which compares two elementary algebra classes taught by the "jigsaw" method and two elementary algebra classes taught in the traditional manner will be presented. Collected data compares test grades, course grades, retention rates, student evaluations, and pre-post test improvement. Responses to a subjective questionnaire reflecting student attitudes toward this method will also be shared. The audience will participate in some introductory jigsaw activities, as well as, be presented with ideas of particular activities that can be incorporated into the mathematics classroom. The presenters anticipate that the audience will recognize the values that this method offers our students, i.e., developing an openness to new ideas, acceptance of others, willingness to work together on common goals and projects, and accepting responsibility for learning.Nancy J.
