NCTM San Diego
Presentation Summary

This is the summary of a presentation given at the 74th Annual NCTM Meeting, 25-28 April 1996, San Diego, CA.

The speaker will describe the Pittsburgh Urban Mathematics Program Algebra One Course, which is an innovative algebra curriculum that uses intelligent computer tutors and a multiple representational approach to empower all students to be successful in first year algebra. Currently, there are 600 students in 21 classes with 16 teachers (including 3 special education teachers and a Chapter One reading specialist) in three urban high schools in the program, but this will be increased to more than 1000 students in the 1995-96 school year. We have very encouraging results from a large scale evaluation, which show substantial achievement gains for the PUMP students.William S. Hadley (Pittsburgh Public Schools, Pittsburgh, PA)
