Easy! Teach them twice as much! The rate at which they absorb knowledge is not a function of time spent sitting in a desk, is it? We all maintain attention for indefinite periods of time at PD workshops or faculty meetings, why can't they?

(Seriously though, I'd like to hear suggestions too. 90 minutes is tough, especially when we're supposed to teach twice as much during that time so they can be ready for an End Of Course test mid year!)

Ann, sorry, I don't have answers, only more questions: specifically, we too
are moving to what I call a modified block schedule (3 days of traditional 7
period days, 2 days with 90-minute long 4-period days).

* WHAT do you do in a 90 minute period? *

I am so excited, but I need ideas, professional development resources,
lessons you have learned, any insight you can give into making this
super-long block as effective as it can be. I have access to money, so I am
willing to buy materials, take online tutorials, whatever, but I cannot see
myself lecturing for 90 minutes. Really, I am happy to take specifics or
generalities, your approach to lesson planning, anything you have.

Thanks for all your experiences!

Shahana
