Red and blue are the two predominant colors in the central field of this carpet. Can you identify which is foreground, and which is background? The field pattern seen here is based upon rotation.

Other patterns in this carpet also delight in ambiguity and symmetry-breaking. On first viewing, the larger designs in the central field appear to be regular, based upon central horizontal and vertical axes. A closer look reveals many inconsistencies introduced by the weaver. How many variations can you find? These are all examples of symmetry-breaking.

Symmetry suggests a correspondence of points around a point, or along or across a line. If you look at the right and left sides of this carpet, in the central field or in the borders, very few designs actually find corresponding points.
