Carpet
Turkey (Kurdish)
18th century

Gift of Wells Campbell Klein
254 x 153 cm

This carpet exhibits several repeated symmetrical motifs, variations of medallions called gul in Turkmen rugs. Each gul incorporates reflections along both horizontal and vertical axes, with color alternation. The contrasting colors here, however, are not as strong as in Turkmen rugs, but they are typical of Kurdish weavings from eastern Turkey.

The linear arrangement of guls in the central field suggests a combination of border patterns with a lot of symmetry-breaking, but there is no field pattern. The borders have a more regularized arrangement of shapes based upon horizontal and vertical reflection.
